Northwest E-Ticket customers may check in for their flight on nwa.com between 24 hours and 60 minutes* prior to the scheduled departure time. NorthWest online Check-in is available for worldwide travel including:
You may check in online as long as you have EITHER your confirmation number from NorthWest (given to you by your travel agent or by the airline), your "Worldperks" frequent flyer number (if you have one), the number of the credit card used to buy the ticket, or, of course, the e-ticket number. I presume you know your name and where you are leaving from....
Self-service Check-in Kiosks are located throughout Northwest's Asia and North American airports and allow E-Ticket passengers to check in and obtain a boarding pass in as little as 30 seconds. (Apart from when there is some egit in front of you who doesn't know which way is up -which only happens when you are in hurry, of course...) You can confirm preferred seat assignments (including exit, aisle and window seats) for a modest fee at time of check-in at nwa.com or at the airport. "Coach Choice" prices will vary from $5 to $25 per leg for travel within the U.S. 48. Coach Choice prices between the U.S. and Hawaii, Alaska and international destinations may be higher. The seat map prices each seat individually, which is quite helpful. All Coach Choice prices are subject to change without notice. Coach Class, by the way, means Economy - aka Cattle Class.

E-First allows E-Ticket customers who check in at airport self-service check-in kiosks or online at nwa.com check-in to upgrade to First Class for a nominal fee. E-First is offered on a space-available basis to purchasers of select fares (that is, the higher ones). E-First is available on select flights within the 48 United States and Alaska, as well as on flights from the 48 United States to Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
*Asia and Mexico - Minimum check in time for flight departures from Asia or Mexico is 3 hours.
My Ease of Use Rating: 9/10 - Features 9/10
In Asia, Self-service Check-in Kiosks are available in four Asian languages. Check-in kiosks are also available at Tokyo's Narita Airport (NRT) as well as several other airports throughout Asia. BUT NOTE: When traveling from Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, Newark, Tampa or Washington, D.C.-Dulles, you must check in at least 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure. When traveling from Las Vegas, you must check in at least 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure

If you are new to online check-in then you may want to read some of my notes, first! Above all, never, ever, ever check in anywhere, anyhow other than for the flight you are about to take. No matter what - UNLESS you are 150% certain that nothing will possibly ever change. You would not believe how complicated life can become if you check in for the return flight (thinking you are saving time) and then find you need to change it. Trust me.
