If you are new to online check-in then you may want to read some of my notes, first!

Need a chauffeur at Heathrow? Click here!

Above all, never, ever, ever check in anywhere, anyhow other than for the flight you are about to take. No matter what - UNLESS you are 150% certain that nothing will possibly ever change. You would not believe how complicated life can become if you check in for the return flight (thinking you are saving time) and then find you need to change it. Trust me.

Welcome to United Airlines online Check-in.

United DC3

Baggage allowance is, basically, 23kg or 2 pieces. First or business class or those that hold a Premier Executive or Star Alliance Gold Card, may take 32Kg. Customers traveling to/from the United States and all international destinations are required to have their baggage checked 45 minutes prior to flight departure time. The free baggage allowance, as well as maximum bag weights, vary with your Mileage Plus status and/or class of service. If a ticket includes both international and domestic travel on two different airlines, then the rules of the carrier initially accepting the baggage will apply.

BEWARE if you are travelling on internal UA flights. There are checked (i.e. hold) baggage charges of between $15 to $30 per bag, for both FIRST and SECOND bags, unless you are in first or business class or hold a frequent flyer card with a high status. Just because you started from London does not exclude you from these charges. (apparently)

I suggest that you sign up for United's automated EasyUpdate flight notification system which can contact you via text, email or phone with up-to-the-minute departure, arrival, delay and cancellation information for your flights. Sign up to receive notifications for a single flight, or if you're a Mileage Plus® member, you can register once to receive information for all your future flights.

United offers unaccompanied minor service for children from 5-17 years of age. For the safety of minors traveling alone, unaccompanied minor service will ensure that your child is boarded onto the aircraft, introduced to the flight attendant, chaperoned during connections and turned over to the appropriate person upon arrival at their final destination. The service is mandatory for unaccompanied minors 5 to 11 years old and optional for 12- to 17-year-olds. If the child is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, he or she may not travel on the last direct or connecting flight of the day. Be aware that the responsible adult bringing the child to the airport (including camp counselors, etc.) must remain at the airport until the child boards and the aircraft departs the gate (Yeah, right!). There is a $99 USD fee for unaccompanied minors traveling on United flights worldwide. The fee applies in each direction of travel. Two or more children traveling together will be assessed one fee for each direction. There is no fee for unaccompanied minors traveling to/from Japan or Brazil.

For passengers who are are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin or are unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seatbelt extender; and/or are unable to put the seat's armrests down when seated. The following policy will apply:

If no unused seats are available on the ticketed flight, then the customer must either purchase an upgrade to a cabin with available seats that address the above-listed scenarios, or change his or her ticket to the next available flight and purchase a second seat in addition to the one already purchased. If a customer meeting any of the above-listed criteria cannot be accommodated next to an empty seat and chooses not to upgrade or change flights and purchase a ticket for an additional seat, he or she will not be permitted to board the flight.
